TUMB 02/20

Trey Garfield, James' neighborhood gang friend, stood outside his front door. A skinny young black guy in torn jeans, a leather jacket, and a tight t-shirt stood on the other side with his hands in his pockets. A single bandana on his arm communicated his gang affiliation to people in the know. He looked more bored than anything. Went inside, looked around Brownstone's house, and couldn't help remarking. It’s like… I don’t know, man. It’s like getting to walk into the motherfucking Batcave. You got some bitch-ass butler hanging out here? I ain’t trying to be disrespectful. It’s just, you’re big shit…the Granite Ghost. This is all low-down; no tech dope. I expected this place to be all super-teched up, and not so fucking clean. I get it. You got some sweet-ass maid action coming in?” Nope, I just like a clean house," Brownstone said.

Trey talks about Brownstone's attitude toward him and his gang. "You know what I like about you, Mr. Brownstone? You’re a man who understands respect. If someone shows you proper respect, you show ‘em proper respect back. I ain’t no fucking dumbass. I know you could lay out every gang in this area and probably still have time to come home and whack off to some porn. But you leave my boys alone, and I appreciate that. You care about the neighborhood.” Trey nodded. “We do too. You do good shit, you know. ” James offered the other man a quick nod. Still, there was also more to it. Men like Trey kept things under control. Nature abhorred a vacuum, and a city abhorred a criminal vacuum even more. As long as the low-level criminals stayed under control and mostly messed with each other, James figured they were providing a service of sorts to the local neighborhood.

TUMB 04/11 Throughout series, protects Brownstone's house and belongings, havings saved a lot of his stuff after the missile destruction, and watching over the construction of his new house.

TUMB 05/3, 9, 10 etc. Brownstone has started a new business, the Brownstone Agency, to handle picking up low-level bounties, and asked Trey to be his first employee. (He could turn the gang into something more disciplined; more useful to both the city and themselves. They could push back against the assholes together, and make good money doing it at the same time.) Trey agreed, and starts to develop a new personae, one with better English grammer (He marveled at Trey. The gang leader could switch up his language in an instant to whatever people expected. It was a good strategy, because it made people underestimate his intelligence.) and vocabulary, better dressed, smarter (wears armor and protection when goes out on the job), and is reading more, as one of his new mottoes is “The more you know, the less you die."( Sun Tzu, The Art of War) He also believes, and told Brownstone so, “I say stick the boys in suits. That can be our Brownstone Agency trademark. We’ll be the best-looking sonsabitches in LA.” Trey believes in trying non-violence first (My name is Trey Garfield. I’m with the Brownstone Agency, and I’m here to bring you in.”), as a reputation will be developed that will save energy and lives further down the line. (I figure if the word goes out that the Brownstone Agency won’t dog on a man once the cuffs are on, more guys will surrender.) Trey has also started recruiting more of his gang to work for the Brownstone Agency (Daryl, Isaiah), so now James has to find someone to train them in proper techniques and behavior.

TUMB 07/20 Trey sits with West and Lafayette in Las Vegas., ironing out the last details of the Brownstone Agency contract with the Las Vegas Police Dept. “Sergeant Choi in Bounty Processing will be your primary contact. You’ll be meeting with him in about twenty minutes. We might work more closely with you in cases where you’re going after people wanted in connection with open homicide cases, though.” Trey offered a cool nod even as his heart tried to gallop out of his chest. He’d gotten used to the respect of Sergeant Mack, but he’d had contact with the man even before the Brownstone Agency. These two detectives in a new city were giving their respect without knowing anything other than that Trey and the boys were bounty hunters. Shit, I have really done it. Trey the gang leader is gone.
