In the practice of magic, the energy paths are more easily handled with the addition of "doors" or "portals" of some kind, through which energy may be channeled to better assist the mage in increasing the effectiveness of their spells, or transformations. This "path" may be in the form of a piece of jewelry, such as a necklace set with stones or metals, that the energy flows through, or in the bodies of animals, such as a witch's cat, a "familiar". In the Oriceran realm, one very valuable piece was a braided gold necklace, with two diamond-shaped lavender stones, which could, with the application of the body heat of the mage, assist that magician by increasing their strength, the power of their spells, or ??

In Michael Anderle's Kurtherian Gambit series, one might assume that Bethany Anne's dog, Ashur, might be considered by those who believe in magic to be a "familiar", a she assisted her to better transmit and use the forces of the Etheric Dimension, the Etheric energies.

Other talismans in Waking Magic are the scarabs of the elders, particularly that of the wizard Rhazdon, whose green-stoned scarab held powers of dark magic. Rings might also be needed, or other amulets, such as the charm with the two interlocking circles that represented the Silver Griffins and the connection between Earth and Oriceran.
